Drawing Room

This room occupies the entire first floor of the Tuscan tower added to Locust Grove by architect Alexander Jackson Davis in 1852. It is Locust Grove’s most formal reception room and is positioned to take advantage of the long view toward the Hudson River. Today, the room appears much the way it did between 1906 and 1915 when the Young family used it for parties and concerts that spilled out onto the porches on either side of the room.

The furnishings were carefully chosen by the Youngs to create an impression of wealth and refinement for their guests. Before an important meal, guests were greeted and entertained here, where the butler could announce dinner with a gong of the Chinese temple bells outside the door.
