Kitchen

The kitchen was part of the original house built in 1830 when staff would have cooked over a fire on the open hearth.  While this space was undoubtedly updated for the Morse family in 1851, no records for this work survive.  The kitchen was updated again in 1901 for William and Martha Young.  At this time, the Boynton range, cabinets, and sink were installed as part of a general renovation and expansion of the staff quarters and workrooms. All cooking for both family and staff took place in this room; food was either sent up on the dumbwaiter to the family dining room one floor above or through the laundry room to the Maids’ Dining Room.
