The historic Locust Grove Estate is today a museum and nature preserve, operated by a not-for-profit foundation for the enjoyment of the public. The unique combination of landscaped lawns, sweeping vistas, elegant collections, and beautiful buildings makes it one of the most intriguing Hudson River estates.

Group Gardens and Grounds Tour
$9 per person (minimum 10 people)
Approximately 100 minutes

With nearly 200 acres of landscaped grounds, Locust Grove is the largest nature preserve between Cold Spring and Hyde Park and it is home to many kinds of fish, wetland creatures and migrating birds. The tour begins with an orientation at the Visitor Center followed by a guided walk that will expose the visitor to the landscape history and development of the ornamental gardens as they relate to the residents of Locust Grove. Scenic vistas planned by Samuel Morse reflect his knowledge of painting and landscape architecture. Key features of the landscape include the park surrounding the mansion, formal Victorian display beds, a large perennial garden developed for the Young family (founders of the museum) featuring antique peonies, and an heirloom kitchen garden. There are also over five miles of carriage roads and walking trails through the wooded landscape leading to a small lake, cool waterfall, and sunny coves along the Hudson River. There are benches on the property and an area of picnic tables. Comfortable shoes and clothing are advised.

Group Mansion and Garden Tour

A combined tour of the mansion and gardens is also available. Visitors enjoy a full house tour and then explore highlights of the garden features nearest the home: the park, perennial garden, and kitchen garden.
