Locust
Grove Summer Day Camp 2008
A CAMP FOR THE
RENAISSANCE CHILD
August 4 -29, 2008 (9:00
AM - 4:00 PM)
Weekly
sessions for children entering grades 2 - 6

Located
at the beautiful estate of the 19th-century
artist and inventor Samuel Morse,
the Locust Grove Summer Day Camp
offers quality programming that is
both entertaining and educational.
Drawing inspiration from Morse’s
artistic achievements and his
invention of the telegraph and Morse
code, the camp encourages children
to explore their inner “Renaissance
child” through a variety of hands-on
activities that showcase the four
main themes of the estate: Science,
Art, History, and Nature.
The camp offers
children exclusive access to the
site’s main attractions, which
include the historic buildings,
heirloom gardens, culinary
facilities, art gallery, science
center, and more. Small group sizes
and a staff of experienced
professionals serve to create a
relaxed atmosphere in which all
campers thrive. For a unique summer
experience that your child will
always remember, Locust Grove is a
fabulous choice.

Locust Grove’s science center serves
over 5,000 children each year with
hands-on learning experiences “that
just can’t be beat,” according to
one local educator. Campers explore
topics such as electromagnetism,
optics, and mechanics through
enjoyable experiments that shed
light on the history of high-speed
communication and the operations of
a working farm.

Locust
Grove has deep roots in the rich
tradition of weaving. The beautiful
blanket pictured above was
hand-woven in the Hudson Valley in
1848, and it is one of many
treasures that campers will discover
on a scavenger hunt in the mansion.
According to feedback from the
children themselves, our two-day
weaver’s workshop consistently ranks
as one of the highlights of the camp
experience, and we are proud to
offer it again in 2007.

With
access to both an heirloom vegetable
garden and a state-of-the-art
kitchen, campers are invited to
prepare and enjoy a variety of
delicious treats. The pumpkin
muffins pictured above were a huge
hit in 2006! There’s no better way
to learn about the history and
science of local agriculture than
through an experience that appeals
to all the senses.
Welcome
to the world of instant messaging .
. . Locust Grove style! Beginning
in 1844, the dots and dashes of
Morse code revolutionized
telecommunications. Today’s campers
enjoy conversing with one another
using 1960s Hasbro signal lights and
a host of other devices. In honor
of Locust Grove’s telegraphic
heritage, the younger and older age
divisions in camp are known
respectively as the “dots” and the
“dashes.”

Locust
Grove’s beautiful grounds are a
recreational paradise. Today’s
campers enjoy leisurely games of
bocce and croquet on the same lawns
where former resident, William
Young, once practiced his golf
swing. Numerous hiking trails offer
additional opportunities for
recreation and exploring the great
outdoors.
