Paintings and Collages
of Hudson River
Waterways

"An
artist can never paint
the same river twice.
The Catskill Mountains
were formed by the power
of rivers. This
exhibition examines the
visual relationship of
rock to water as
evidenced in three major
tributaries flowing into
the Hudson River.
Plattekill Creek tumbles
through the famous
Platte Clove;
Caaterskill Creek
hurtles down the
Caaterskill Clove; and
the cold blue Rondout
Creek defines its stream
sides coursing through
Peekamoose Ravine.
I draw and paint
outdoors at the water’s
edge. In my field
paintings I define form
and shape and position
elements into a deep and
readable landscape
space. In my studio, I
enlarge and modify my
field compositions as
large-scale collages. I
am attracted to white
and rushing water, to
cliffs and rock
outcroppings, to the
deep forest pools. In
all of these works, I
draw upon my deep love
for nature and my
appreciation for the
historic painters who
have celebrated our
Hudson River Valley.
TRIBUTARIES is a
contemporary exhibition
honoring our ancient and
beautiful landscape." -

2009 solo show recipient
Locust Grove was
the nineteenth-century
country estate of Samuel
Morse, the artist,
founder of the National
Academy of Design, and
the inventor of the
telegraph and Morse
Code. In the twentieth
century, the estate was
owned by Poughkeepsie’s
prominent Young family
who were noted
collectors of Hudson
River School of Art
paintings and the
founders of the museum
at Locust Grove. In
honor of the site’s
history and connection
to the visual arts,
Locust Grove opened its
doors in 2006 to
contemporary artists
whose work reflects this
style of artwork.
Juried by a panel of art
professionals by slide
or CD/ROM submissions,
selected artists will be
offered a solo show at
the estate’s elegant
Museum Pavilion. Locust
Grove encourages artists
to develop new works of
art for this exhibition
opportunity. In an
effort to give artists
time to prepare, the
solo shows offered in
this jury process are
for the year 2011.
